Как поведение влияет на обучение в Stem
How can behavior in STEM affect learning in the classroom?
Behaviors
Classroom behaviors can be challenging depending on the level and the developmental levels. Most school systems have adopted a form of Positive behavior System, which allows for more positive steps to be taken before the student receives a negative infraction. Depending on the level of commitment to the similar programs from each school, referral and suspension rates have been reduced.
In the classrooms, teachers see a variety of different behaviors. Some are linked to specific learning disabilities, some are linked to medical conditions like ADHD, and some are a product of the home environment. Regardless the cause of the behavior, it is the teacher's responsibility to know his or her student, understand their background, and be ready react to any misbehaviors that occur.
How does this relate to STEM?
During a STEM activity, the students have a variety of objects at their stations that they are required to construct an object using. The students are also divided into groups of four, so there will be multiple groups throughout the classroom.
Without a strong classroom management system in place, how can the teacher trust all of the students to use the materials in an appropriate manner? How can the teacher be expected to manage all of the different stations? If multiple students misbehave, can the teacher ensure that each student will be receiving a fair reprimand?
With a strong classroom management system in place, the teacher has a set of procedure in place for working on STEM based activities and the students understand the consequences for not complying with them. Each group member is assigned a job. By doing this it makes each person accountable for completing work in the group and no one is just sitting there.
Since all of the students understand the procedures and have jobs, it will make it easier for the teacher to walk around the room. While walking around the room, the teacher can have discussions with the different groups about the activities and what they are discovering. Additionally, it will make it easier for the teacher to spot students that are off task or misbehaving and have them complete the necessary consequence.
If this is an inclusion classroom, the students are at an advantage because there are two teachers in the classroom. Since one of the main goals of the inclusion teacher is not to single out the student with special needs, he or she will help all students needing assistance.
